Directions
We suggest crossing the border at the Lukeville Port of Entry. We fill up our gas tanks and use the restroom in Ajo or Why.
Get to Gila Bend via I-10 from the west valley or through Maricopa from the east valley. Continue through Gila Bend until you reach McDonalds. Turn right at the sign just before the McDonalds for Mexico/SR 85 South. Take SR 85 South to Ajo (39 miles). Continue on SR 85 South to Why, AZ (10 miles). Continue on SR 85 South to Lukeville, AZ (27 miles).
Once you cross the border, you will be in Sonoyta, Mexico. At this time, distances change from miles to kilometers. Drive slowly through Sonoyta. 20kph = 12mph, 40 = 25mph, 60 = 37mph. From the border to the center of town is 25 mph.
Continue on the main road for approximately 1.8 miles. You will arrive at a 3-way intersection with a stop sign. At this time,
you will see a monument and signs for PTO Peñasco and Santa Ana to the left. Make a left at the stop sign and the bear right, follow the signs to PTO Peñasco. Stay to the right towards Puerto Peñasco/Caborca at the Y on the road. There is a traffic light soon after you bear right. Continue straight through this traffic light to Mexico Highway 8. The speed limit drops to 12mph from the fork until after Ley grocery store. Then back up to 25mph. As you get to the outskirts of town, follow the flow of traffic through the desert (usually around 75mph). Continue on Highway 8 to Puerto Peñasco (60 miles).
As you begin to enter Puerto Peñasco, turn right before the bridge on Highway 3. Turn left on Blvd. Costa Diamante. Turn left on Blvd. Dr. Ernesto Guevara del Campo. Turn right at the traffic circle which will lead to Las Palomas.
